Gabriel's Splendid Flower

Gabriel was tiring of staring at the stars from the roof. They had twinkled the same way for all his thousand years, moving through the heavens in their imperceptible, solemn way. He had in the last hundred years grown into the habit of examining them from his Paris rooftop every clear night. He now found them dismal and inconsiderate.

He jumped easily from the roof, spreading his feathered wings to land softly and soundlessly in the street below. He folded his wings about him, where they settled against his chest and shoulders, appearing to dim human eyes to be only the lapels of his coat. He was stylish, really, for someone who passed so long a time watching the fashion change every year. He wore a black frock coat, nothing too dreary, a smart white shirt, and carried a sleek walking cane. He kept his lightish hair in a neat tail at the nape of his neck, and always carried a handkerchief. He was not a tall sort of man, but rather average height, with broad, strong shoulders. Women swooned over him, but he rarely found them of any note. In fact, in his own words, he "invented" the term "Strumpet."

Tonight, he felt a walk along the canal would do him good. Not that he savored fresh air, but he liked to mingle with people, feeling their energy cascade off of them in fluid pools. It was how he fed. Sure, he succumbed to sanguine delights occasionally, but there was something ...
