Gabriel: A Strange House

Aglae woke up in Gabriel's quiet bedchamber. She was clean, and dressed in a white shirt, probably Gabriel's own. Her head swam with the drunken memory of the night before. Or was it the night before? She could not at once remember how long she'd been asleep, but it hardly mattered now. If her grandfather had noticed her missing, he would have made a police report and forgotten all about her. She decided to try her feet.

She took hold of one of the posters of the bed to steady herself. She tried to shake her head to clear it, but she still felt as one feels when one has ingested far too much wine the night before. And she was hungry. Ravenously so. She followed the wall with her hand, looking for any sign of her serendipitous lover, or of the kitchen. She decided to do a little exploring.

She found that the bedchamber was actually in the basement. There were many rooms down here, including two washrooms and various other rooms for upkeep of the house. There were several closets, some empty, some filled with fine things, from Heaven knows where. There was one room locked. It was closed by large double doors, which were solid and did not budge when she pulled on the handles. Behind this room were the stairs to the upper level.
