It was just one of those things. He was 19 and I was 27. We met in a bookstore, at a book signing. My co-author and I had been doing a whirlwind tour across much of the continental US to promote our new book, Art of Dating: The Complete Manual, and we'd finally landed back in my home town.

Yeah, it was another of those relationship help books, in something resembling dialogue form, written from the point of view of a hip New Yorker (yours truly) and a hip Californian (Vince). I'd been writing a relationship advice column in one of the small, local New York City magazines, and he'd been writing something similar in Los Angeles. Our styles were pretty similar, and, somehow or other, a publishing exec discovered us and decided that we should collaborate. We met at a party, didn't hate each other, considered fucking, decided not to, and a year later, the book was born.

Our publishers promoted the hell out of it - it shocked me how crowded each signing was. Vince and I got ridiculous amounts of letters and emails. We'd both enjoyed modest popularity with our columns, but now, we were an underground hit. Perhaps we really did tap into the zeitgeist of the times - at every bookstore, every student union, hundreds of people seemed to show up, wanting to get a double signature in their book and to tell us that we'd changed their life, helped them improve their dating life, helped them find a relationship, helped them feel more confident, and all sorts of other things. ...
