It was a pretty painful divorce. My husband Joe and I had been married for 13 years and I thought everything was going along quite well. Joe had built a thriving business in importing gift items out of the orient. What I didn't realize for the past two years is that he was taking his 28 year old secretary on these buying trips and they were staying in the same room!

Because of the way Joe had bought and titled the house in the company's name, when it came time to split up the assets, I was basically left with nothing. He had shown some phantom business partner to be the majority owner of the business so I got enough to buy a plane ticket to California to visit my sister Candy and her family.

When I told Candy I was broke and needed a place to stay, she said I could stay with them for as long as I wanted. They had a small basement apartment that was originally built as maid's quarters, but they didn't have a maid! Candy's husband Roger was a fantastic guy.
