We had been neighbors for many years. Her name was Maude. She, my wife, and I were the same age, that certain age, not yet middle-aged, but certainly not young. Maude's husband was somewhat older, somewhat enigmatic. He seemed to have an important job, but we didn't know what it was. My wife and I sometimes suspected that Maude didn't know what his job was either.

The four of us talked often, meeting on the street, working in the yard, or at church. Picking up newspapers and mail when the other couple was on a trip. Having the same gardener. Very occasionally we would have lunch together, particularly in the spring and summer when we could eat out on the patio. If asked, I think my wife would have said they were good friends. I had observed Maude carefully when we first met years ago. I had seen her as attractive but not very outgoing, especially around men. When she talked to my wife, I would often hear her laughing. She didn't seem to laugh as much around the men. I didn't try to break through her shell. Her clothes were simple but expensive. ...
