I was a bit late to the office that day. As I entered into the office, I found everyone quietly on with their work, but they all looked at me as I entered, which made me feel nervous. I walked to my desk, sat down in my chair and got myself busy with work. Something was wrong, I kept telling myself, things couldn't be so quiet in the first hour of work. The usual din was missing. I found it very odd and ominous. Well, I wasn't going to be the one to break the silence, so I too got myself buried into the work.

I worked as an assistant accountant with a small firm. The pay was alright, considering it was my first employment after college. The firm was owned by an elderly lade, Mrs De Antonio. She was nearing fifty and walked with a cane. Usually though she was serious about work, she never raised an eyebrow even if we were all fooling around for a few minutes together, whatever time of the day. So it struck me as odd that even she would not be seen. As the lunch hour neared, the door to Mrs De Antonio's cabin, we called her The Lady, opened and she walked out, propping herself on the cane held fast in her left hand, walking with her usual limping gait. Following her at a few feet strode out a young man of around 30, and the whispers again fell silent. I knew he was the cause of the silence in the office.

As they both walked out of the door and vanished from sight, excited colleagues gathered around my desk, all talking at once. I had to restrain them, to get the information out so I could understand it. ...
