Pontius Pilate was a stern, no nonsense man. He had to be. He was the Roman governor for the most difficult province to govern in the Empire. In just the few years he'd been in office he sometimes felt like he'd aged ten years. Herod was a pain in the ass. The Jewish high priest was an even bigger pain in the ass. The rebellious Jews were a significant larger anal agony and now, standing at attention in front of him was a junior tribune straight from the bath houses and brothels of Rome. Pilate rubbed his blood shot eyes and tried to find something remotely resembling manners. After all, this fledgling claimed to be the son of a senator.

The governor sighed, "All right tribune, what did you say your name was again?"

"Tribune Marcus Marius Cornelius, lord governor!"

Pilate grimaced from the loud sound that emanated from the younger man. Pilate had consumed too much wine the previous evening but it was the only way he could keep his sanity in this misbegotten corner of the known world. "That's what I thought you said. Do you have dispatches?"
