A FIRST-RATE EDUCATION

I was eighteen years old and leaving home for the first time. At the bus station in the little Kansas town where I was born and raised, I hugged my mother, promised her that I would try to get home on weekends, and headed off to the State University to continue my education. And what an education I got!

The first order of business after getting off the bus was to find a place to live. I couldn't afford to live in the dorms on campus, but I soon found the next best thing - a shabby efficiency apartment nearby. After a grueling first day of classes, I headed for the campus bookstore armed with a long list of textbooks.

I met Willow in the used book department. She was the prettiest girl that I had ever seen. She was just a tad over five feet tall, blonde and shapely. Every curve and bulge was in exactly the right place. My strong desire to meet her overcame my shyness. When she leafed through one of the books that I had on my list, I saw my opportunity. "Hi, are you taking that class, too?" I asked. She glanced at me and nodded. "I didn't see you there today," I said. "Everybody knows that it's a waste of time to go the first day," she answered. I could tell by her accent that she wasn't from Kansas. "I didn't know that." ...
