When Grandma Came by Bittic

It was not a surprise to me to have Grandma come for a visit so soon after her last visit. The bit that was surprising - she now has a traveling companion. Grandpa has been gone for more than eight years and Grandma has been out traveling about between our various relatives. She still has her place in Elmwood though. Her friend is a lovely young woman, just a few years younger than Grandma. She seems really nice, nice enough that you'd turn to look at her again.

My mom greeted them after the taxi delivered them. Of course, I was stuck with hauling their bags. It wasn't too bad until I had to climb the stairs. I must be getting out of shape. When Arleen, Gram's companion saw all the problems I was having as a sorry porter, she took pity. She excused herself from the conversation with my mom and turned to pick up her large bag. She walked right up the stairs carrying it in one hand while at the same time she had her other hand under my armpit - helping me carry a much lighter bag that I was using both hands on!
