Marcus Marius Cornelius 7 By Will Buster

Pilate sat on a low couch as he drank from a large, silver goblet. The mixed wine was one of his few pleasures in this part of the known world. To be sure his wife helped him get through the daily grind, but he longed for the quiet village of Herculaneum. He loved that small town even more than the imperial capital. Rome was always so crowded and noisy although it was true there was always something important happening there. Yet, it was Herculaneum that seemed to beckon to him with its gentle sea breezes and restful gardens. Oh well it was back to reality as he winked at his centurion Lucius. "So Lucius, how has our young tribune done?"

Marcus was sitting across from the two older men sipping his own wine nervously as he waited for the rugged centurion's vocal doom.

Lucius gave the tribune a wolfish smile and then he answered the governor. "He's done pretty well commander, considering everything. I didn't have to lash him at all, tis a pity. I would have liked to criss-cross that dainty back of his but he followed all my orders and he's learned a great deal. Of course I can still trash him in a fight but he won't be giving your men any stupid orders. He's ready for command."

The over worked governor laughed because of the glum look that Lucius ...
