Dean and his wife had separated and Dean had rented a nice 3 bedroom apartment down Bayside. The wounds of the separation were still fairly raw, but he was getting his life back on track. He'd rented a 3 bedroom place because his son and his son's girlfriend had wanted to move in with him at the time. The third bedroom was a handy spare room. It wasn't long before Jess moved in too. Jess was only 19 years old, and was a friend of his son's girlfriend. She had fallen out with her parents and needed somewhere to live. Dean's son Ross and his girlfriend Annette asked Dean if Jess could come and stay until she found something more permanent, or worked things out with her parents. It would only be temporary. Being a kind hearted soul, Dean agreed, on the basis it would only be for a few months and that she would contribute to their living expenses.

That was 6 months ago, and there was sign of Jess moving out. Not that it bothered Dean. Apart from being messy around the place, she was good company, and although a little too skinny for his tastes, she wasn't all that bad on the eye. But those kind of thoughts Dean suppressed whenever they surfaced. After all, he was 30 years her senior in age, and she was a friend of Ross and Annette.

But then came the night of the storm. And what a storm it was! It was late at night, maybe even midnight. Ross and Annette had gone over to stay the weekend with her parents. Jess and Dean were the only two people home that Friday night. ...
