Roger Reborn 5

Roger couldn't believe all the preparation that had to be accomplished for him to have a simple bath. The family was going to church on the morrow and he'd decided to make himself as presentable as possible. Allan and Belinda were attending a small party at the Collins home in Chelmsford and with fewer people around it made his ablutions a little easier to conduct. It was apparent from the servants that this was an unusual request especially from master Roger. They had to fill a large oaken tub with warm water and when he was finished it was quite a labor to drain it all. Actually two of the servants took advantage of the luke-warm water to clean themselves after he'd gone back to his own room.

The next morning the Hallworth family went to the church in the village of Sudbury. It was Church of England of course and quite large for a town of such small size. Roger got the impression that it was a social occasion as well as a religious one as they walked to their family seat right at the front of the sanctuary. To Roger's surprise the church was rapidly filled as opposed to the vast almost empty churches he'd seen when he was growing up in the late sixties. The crowd was talkative and boisterous while they waited for the right reverend Charles Allworthy to make the weekly sermon.
