Sunday night found the Hallworth family at yet another gathering of friends at the Langdon home. Apparently Robert Devereau had been able to prevail upon his son to make an appearance in spite of his previous anger.

Roger noticed with considerable amusement that Kate and Mary had started a whist game with Arthur Fitzherbert and Robert Devereau while Elaine and Edward seemed to have disappeared. Allan and Belinda were casually talking to William along with reverend Charles Allworthy and his pretty, plump wife. The reverend and his wife were obviously waiting for their own turn at the cards. Apparently it would be Allan and William taking on the minister and his wife. His theory was confirmed when another table was prepared and they sat down and began playing.

Roger watched with an enigmatic grin on his face as he saw Mary and Kate doing their usual crosscut butchery at the expense of Robert and Arthur. He caught Kate's eye and he gave her a malicious grin and a wink, but he said nothing.

Alice Pendleton soon sat down beside him and she whispered, "Aren't you playing this evening Roger?" "Perhaps later on, unless Kate has broken the bank. I understand that you and Hugh Blackstone have arrived at an understanding? " ...
