Edward Devereau, Hugh Blackstone William Langdon and Doctor Adams were waiting at the ruined chapel at the appointed time. The spot was gloomy, as the early morning sun hadn't quite penetrated the trees that thickly protected the ancient stones from the scrutiny of day. Their horses were quietly grazing near some trees that they were tethered to. As for the men themselves they loitered around the front of the chapel, somewhat nervously awaiting the anticipated appearance of Sir Allan Hallworth.

Outside the chapel there was an old stone bench and a long unusable horse trough also made of stone. It was filled with earth and grass and weeds grew out of it. The picturesque ruin was a testament to the passage of several centuries as well as to an earlier faith both dead and still alive.

Roger's voice sprang out of the trees with his approach. "Good morning, gentlemen! So glad you could make an appearance."

They looked at Roger in some surprise. Edward asked, "Where's your father?"
