The year is 2027. The spacecraft ‘Voyager 33' is 3 million miles from Earth. Its mission - to drill through the ice of Europa and discover what lurks within the oceans below. ‘Europa' is one of the many moons of Jupiter and it is just possible that life could exist within the water beneath the 5km crust of ice. It is widely believed that the oceans are heated by the planet's active core.

Its small crew of scientist/space explorers is as follows:

Heather Love is 33 and is one of the first English women astronauts. This is the first time she has been on a mission that has taken her so far away from Earth. She is missing her husband, James, to whom she has been married for the last 10 years although they have been together for 17 years. They have known each other since high school and are very much childhood sweethearts.

Ivan Poborski is Russia's premier space explorer and has been involved in many space missions - but this is by far the most important of his career. He is a strong and well-built man who takes his work very seriously. He rarely engages in conversation unless talking about the mission and is very much an enigma to Heather. She finds his mysterious nature quite intriguing and although she doesn't really fancy him, his masculinity does make her fidget in her seat at times.
