'It was hot' just doesn't say enough. 97 degrees; 97 humid degrees. No breeze; the air seemed too heavy to move. The tropics had come to New York City.

And it was worse in the old apartment building; no ventilation, certainly no air-conditioning. Then at approximately 4:05 pm, the power went out. It was probably due to those people who did have AC. Now Jonah would have to walk up six flights of stairs to get to their shoebox apartment and motionless fans.

Kendra had worked the breakfast shift at the diner. After that she had gone for her daily workout. She felt clean and fresh after her shower - until she left the club. Within a few blocks, she was like everyone else on the streets - hot and sweaty.

When she got home, she had changed into a blue bikini top and a pair of shorts. She grabbed a cold beer and sat in front of the fan. It didn't help much, but it did help. Her skin glistened with sweat. The radio was playing "Summer in the City".

Jonah got off at 4:00 and Kendra was just going to call him when the power went out. Getting him on her cell, she told him to pick up a couple cold cut subs. There was no way she wanted anything hot to eat.
