He gunned the engine of the eighteen-wheeler and pulled towards the exit from the truck-stop. The truck was full of diesel and he was full of salad and steak and fries. It would be a long evening's drive before he'd finally have to stop for the night. He was surprised to see a girl hitch-hiking on her own. Normally he wouldn't pick up hitch-hikers, too many stories of problems, and once moving he didn't like to stop. But the truck was almost stopped and he was bored. The book on CD that he'd been listening to had finished and he hadn't brought another one. He pulled over and she climbed up into the cab.

They talked about the weather, and how she shouldn't be hitching as a single girl, and then somehow they got onto the subject of the internet.

"It's odd, isn't it," he said, "how you can ask and answer questions on the net that would be shocking if asked, say, in a bar."

"Hitching is a bit like that too," she said. "I don't really know who you are and you don't know who I am. We will probably never meet again, so it really doesn't matter if we tell each other really personal stuff."

"OK. How about we talk as if we were on the internet sending each other emails."
