About a year after we moved to Taiwan, Laurie started working in a private kindergarten in the "western" part of the city. The students were the children of American and European ex-pats and children of wealthy Chinese who wanted an English education. One of her colleagues (and good friend) was an English woman named Katherine. They became quite close - but I did not get a chance to meet her and her husband, Justin, until a Christmas party at a mutual friend's home that year.
