It was the day before Thanksgiving. As was the case on about any given day, I worked late. Except today, I had missed my train to the airport and my flight to Atlanta to be with my family on the eve of Thanksgiving. At this point, I just wanted some sleep. My boss had an insatiable appetite for work and assumed that everyone did.

I entered Canal Street station, scurried across the floor and down the stairs to the "J" train. The train was to depart at 7:25. I looked at the clock and it was 7:26. Damn! I would have to wait another 20 minutes for a train.

As I arrived at the bottom of the stairs, I realized there was a problem. The boarding deck was packed full of people to the point people were standing on the bottom stairs. Standing shoulder to shoulder, hip-to-hip, dick-to-ass, it was a sea of people. I stood on about the third step from the bottom as I could go no further. I looked at the clock to discover it was 7:27, but no train. I couldn't believe it. The train never runs more than a minute late and clearly the train had not been here because there were so many people waiting.

By now the people behind me were beginning to push. I got a little short with the gentleman behind me. He took it in stride as we all do in this overcrowded pit of humanity that we call the Big Apple.

The train arrived at 7:29. Only a few people attempted to get off and ...
