The relentless partying of Julie's downstairs neighbor puts her scholarship at stake. Stressed and anxious she retaliates by putting them through an ordeal of Gothic proportion with the help of Inge a visitor from Denmark.

It is 2:45 am on a Tuesday. I am cramming for an exam on Gothic History, a component of my European history course. I am not a crammer, my brain doesn't work that way. Helping Denise with her Psych Lab tore into valuable study time on the weekend. So here I am stressed to the max, jacked up on coffee and sleep deprived adrenaline. Hopelessness fills my stomach with butterflies. Seven hours to go before the exam.

The noise from the E Kids downstairs sends sound shock waves from the soles of my feet to my forehead. My desk, cluttered with papers, rattles in time to the techno music blaring from Maxwell's 'killer' sound system. Yeesh, the only thing killer about it is the brain cells that are undoubtedly being vaporized by 160 decibels of throbbing base, that and all the illicit [censored] they use to go with it.

I return to the obscure article I am reading, "Punishment and its role in early Gothic justice circa 170 BC - 450 AD." I try for the gazillionth time to finish reading the first paragraph: ...
