Release and Devotion

The world was lousy. No good. Anger and hatred were seeping into every aspect of Duke's life. In his forties now, he realized he'd not done anything close to what he'd planned for his life. Instead of making a difference in the human condition he just went out and collected a paycheck and pursued material things to keep ahead of the proverbial Jones family. In his work for the probation department he dealt with the very worst of human society, most of whom didn't have the least interest in maintaining a clean lifestyle. Then there were the people of the country as a whole, not seeing, or worse yet, not caring, that every day more and more of their freedoms were snipped away by the corporate entities taking over the government on both sides of the political aisle. The human race, he thought, was the garbage heap of the universe- killing each other over silly archaic religious notions of God and faith. The fools didn't know the only God in this fucked up world was money.

Duke was on his way home, to his little house and perfect wife and kids, when he decided to pass up his freeway exit and keep driving. Not to drive away from his mundane life for good- he didn't have the guts for that- he was heading to the one place he could release negative energy and feel good again.
