Chapter twelve -

In compiling this narration of the life and times of one Wilbraham Rungvishna, of which I have written much and you, the reader, have read in equal measure, I find that the telling of a good tale is sometimes at odds with the need to keep my reader abreast of the latest development from the front line. The problem is an ancient one, which has confounded generations of story-tellers before me. How, I ask myself, am I to set up future events and future chapters, foreshadow as it were, and yet keep my readers entertained with up to the minute antics? It's a problem that presents several points of interest.

Suppose I chuck all the foreshadowing and set-upping, and just tell a series of self-contained stories. This method has two draw-backs, that I can see; first, it's playing games with the truth, for the way these events happened in my life frequently involved foreshadowing. Events today had their precursor in events previous, and such. Secondly, such a strategy lacks scope, when a fellow reads of something that happens in a future chapter, he might be fogged, "how did Silversmith get that way with regards to Binks?" he may ask himself, and without foreshadowing in previous chapters, there will be no way to illuminate the dark.

On the other hand, foreshadowing with no up to the minute antics is obviously all wrong, for if you foreshadow perpetually, but never ...
