Remember being a teenager, back in the days before the internet and cell phones and email and instant messaging and PS2's and...? I do. We had to resort to using our initiative for entertainment during school holidays. I was sixteen when my cousin Dave, who was also my best friend and around the same age as me, and I organized ourselves to go on a cycling holiday during the summer break. The planning was quick and simple; it was a four-day jaunt, up to stay a couple of days with Angela and then back home again. We figured the trip up and back would be a day each and so it proved to be. I'd never met Angela before but she was the niece of the girl my uncle was dating at the time; a tortuous connection, I know, but the three of us had a great time together, exploring the farm she lived on and walking and swimming at the huge beach that formed one boundary of their land. I liked Angela a lot, but she was nursing a serious crush on Dave; I knew when I was wasting my time so I gave up and got on with having fun. We all made sure we had each others address when we set off to go home and I got the surprise of my life when a letter arrived from her in the post a few days later. I replied and soon enough I found I had a pen-friend.

We stayed in touch erratically for the next few years, writing and calling occasionally until I rang her up one summer Friday night.
