Jake was far too devoted to his team to object when the coach yanked him from the game. More devoted to it, he mused as he slunk off the court, than to his wife, or he would not have let that smile distract him like this.

"Where'd you leave your head?" the coach asked as she hurled a towel against his chest.

"Huh?"

"Your head. It's not in the game, so I'm asking where it is."

Jake thought about walking past to the last spot on the bench, farthest from the deserved scolding. He'd looked brain-damaged out there, passing up easy shots, letting opponents slip right past for layups, and letting a rebound bounce off the side of his head with not a move to catch the ball. Of course she'd hauled his ass out of the game. And he wanted to hide.

But no one else was left on the bench but the coach and the one woman available to substitute into a female position, what with three players ...
