Some of you will understand when I say that one's time in the Armed Forces develops strong, lasting friendships, friendships that stand the test of time. I met Jerry back in the '80s. We were both at Pressure Chamber "school" to get certified for flying status. I was heading to Asia and a recon unit and Jerry was going to be crewing on a KC-135. We had become fast friends and we did our best to stay in touch wherever we were stationed.

Fast-forward about ten years to the early '90s. Jerry and I ended up settling in the same area, about 75 miles of good highway between our homes, an easy ninety minute drive to catch a game on TV or a round of golf or a weekend poker game. I wasn't dating anyone seriously but Jerry seemed to have hit it off when he started dating Michelle.

True love won the day. Their engagement was announced six months later, a date set for a June wedding. It was to be a small wedding party, Jerry's two brothers standing by his side and Michelle's best friend, Kris, as Maid-of-Honor, and Michelle's younger sister as the other bridesmaid.

The appointed day arrived, sunny without being hot, a perfect day for a happy celebration. They exchanged their vows, took the requisite pictures, jumped into the limo and sped away to the reception.
