Shortly after I closed my business and retired, my wife of many years suddenly passed away, leaving me with a home and a mortgage that were both too large. I sold the house, and rented a room from Helen, a 40-year-old widow in the neighborhood. It didn't take me long to get settled in, and the widow and I got along well. She had an 18-year-old daughter, Melanie, who was headed to college in the fall.

One Friday evening, I told Helen I was headed out to see a movie, and probably wouldn't be home before 11:30. Melanie had left the day before to check out a college 50 miles or so up the highway, and she wasn't expected back before Sunday. So Helen knew she would have the place to herself for the entire evening.

I arrived at the Cineplex just before 8:00, only to discover that the movie I wanted to see was no longer playing. I looked over the other movies that were available, and none of them appealed to me. So I headed home, but stopped at a coffee shop for a quick dessert and a cup of coffee. When I arrived home, I came in through the back door, which was near my bedroom. I could hear the sound of the TV coming from the living room, and I thought I should let Helen know I was home before I crawled into bed with a good book.

As I walked down the hall toward the living room, I was able to make out some of the dialogue on the TV. I have to admit I was somewhat surprised that it was obviously an X-rated movie she was watching. Not ...
