A knock on the door awakened Doug early the next morning and he quickly beat a path to the adjoining bathroom. After relieving himself, he took a quick shower under the tepid flow of water, shaved, and brushed hid teeth. Entering the kitchen, he was delighted to see a demure, though glowing, Maria talking to her mother. She was explaining they would be spending the day at Pompeii. Their bus was leaving in less than an hour and they would get something to eat on the way to the terminal. It would be late when they returned. She would let Doug into the house through her apartment so as not to awaken the family.

As they left the house, Maria said they should stop at the market and purchase food for the day.

They entered a small shop adjacent to the Codero home and purchased a large round loaf of brown bread, a block of cheese and two liters of red wine. Upon leaving the shop, Maria turned to Doug and said she had been to Pompeii many times and, with her seductive smile, asked if he really wanted to fight crowds on busses or, would he rather her tell him about the ancient ruins in the comfort and seclusion of her apartment.

Pompeii held no such interest that would rival a day alone with the auburn haired beauty. He was quick to respond. ...
