Collective bargaining.

Starting work in a factory, after I had been made redundant from a reasonably good job, I soon realised that, even though I complained about my old boss, he was a dream compared to my new employer.

Within a month, I was so sick of being blackmailed into overtime and doing jobs that I knew I shouldn't be doing, I decided to join a union, admitted at the time I knew nothing about unions, but really just wanted some advice.

Within a week I had my union pack through with some useful numbers to phone for advice. Picking up the phone I contacted one of the numbers and explained the situation. Listening to a guy called Martin on the other end of the phone; I took notes then hung up feeling more confident about my position.

Heading into work the following morning, I waited for the boss to appear about overtime, and then finally told him that I wasn't interested.

"You know, you're just new here and we don't look favourably on employees who cause trouble and don't want to work for the cause" he said quietly as I quickly realised that he had just delivered a threat.
