I'd been in basically dead-end jobs since I'd started work, and at the age of 31, I decided to get myself a proper job. I signed up for a home learning course on PC Maintenance and ploughed into it as though my life depended on it. After numerous tests, I finally completed the course and gained myself a valuable qualification and decided that this was where my future was.

I sent out CV's to all the major companies in the area, and then to all the minor one's, when the first attack failed. I was knocked back on every occasion, until a chance meeting at a BBQ, gained me an interview for the county education authority. I must have impressed them as I was given a six week trial period, shadowing a current techie, with the view to being accepted into a new project they were going to run when the new school year started in September. I breezed through my trial period and was given my new job to start in the first week of September, so I had 8 weeks to kill and spent most of it on my own pc, mostly reading stories like this.

The education authority was going to give schools the option of ringing them whenever they had an IT problem and wait for a techie to come out and fix it; this could be next day, next week or next month, depending on the size of the school and the severity of the problem, or having someone (me) come to them for 2 hours at the same time, same day, every week to perform routine maintenance to try to limit any problems from occurring.
