I woke up with a start. Amy was still lying on me, asleep. I looked at my watch; it was 2 o'clock. It had stopped raining and, looking out the window, the slate-grey sky looked lighter to the west. Somebody knocked on the front door and scared the shit out of me. Amy stirred and I nudged her.

"Wake up, there's someone at the door"

"What?" She sat up stiffly, stretching and yawning as I scrambled out from under her.

"Somebody's outside" I caught a glimpse of a mud-spattered Police 4x4 out the window as I opened the door. An exhausted-looking cop stood on the doorstep in muddy boots and leggings. He looked up from his notebook.

"Mr John Preston?" he asked.

"Yes officer. What can I do for you?" I asked politely.

"Just doing the rounds sir, checking up to make sure you're ok. I had a phone message from Graham saying you and a young lady were stranded here" He looked over my shoulder as Amy came into view behind me.

"I'd hardly call us stranded" I said with a grin "Graham and Barbara are ...
