The party was in full swing when Zuri arrived at four-thirty on Sunday afternoon. As she stepped over the threshold she was greeted by the hostess with a hug and an air kiss on each cheek, and handed over her canvas tote containing a chilled bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, a birthday card and a box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts for the birthday girl. The birthday girl, Karen, was turning sixty-four years old that day. She was a friend of Mae, the hostess and Zuri's big sister. Zuri didn't know Karen that well but there were lots of fun people at the party she did know and was psyched up to have a good time.

Zuri lived in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Costa Rica. Known for its ecology, the beautiful beaches, and green abundant land. The birds sang without fail every single morning, and Zuri looked forward to glimpsing monkeys playing in the trees. The indigenous people, known as Tico's, were a happy and smiling people able to enjoy themselves no matter what or where. It was for these reasons Zuri came to this land and stayed.

There was enough cake to fill a ten foot table. There were a few plates of those little cucumber sandwich triangles with the crusts cut off, placed between the cakes, and a myriad of vegetable sculptures placed every so often for special effect.
