I flicked the light switch off and closed the office door. Finally I could go home! There's nothing like thinking you've finished a day's work at 5 and then realising you've got 3 hours of paperwork to do yet. There's nothing to it but to get it done. Another late dinner for me..

But I'm glad it's all done now as I walk to the elevator and punch the button. 14 floors down, a 2-minute walk to the station, a 30 minute commute home where there was a bottle of '03 Shiraz waiting for me, courtesy of my cousin's vineyard. Dinner would be Thai take away as usual, and I'd probably watch a bit of tv before collapsing into bed.

Another night at my place as usual.

The elevator buzzes its arrival, surprisingly loud in the otherwise quiet hallway. As I walk in I hear the sound of a pair of heels pick up their pace on the tiles nearby. I poke my head back outside to see her rushing to catch the lift, looking slightly awkward in the black strappy shoes which obviously weren't designed for running. She looks like she'd prefer to trade business jacket and skirt for a sports bra and shorts.

I stand in the doorway casually: our eyes meet and she realises I'm going to hold the lift for her. She slows to a more comfortable pace, flashing me a brilliant smile as she makes it to the doorway. ...
