It was a drizzly Friday morning before Mother's Day, but Jay and I were ready to start our weekend, as we do every year, looking for our favorite mushrooms in the woods of northern Minnesota. We got in the car and headed the thirty miles north to meet with Jean and Mike our long time friends. We arrived at their house shortly after eight in the morning and had a cup of coffee while we waited on Dan and Kathy to arrive. Once we were all set it was off to hunt the allusive morel.

By noon we had all managed to gather a few mushrooms, but the hunting was slim this year. The woods had been dry most of the spring and not favorable for mushrooms in this area. We hunted for a while after lunch but only managed to gather a handful more between the six of us. Pretty depressing as we normally do quite well during this weekend each year.

Jean and Mike decided to call it quits for the day and head back home as their son had his prom this weekend. After spending the entire day in the drizzle and cold I was pretty much over hunting mushrooms as well. Jay asked Dan and Kathy if they would like to try one more spot around our cabin south of here. We still had several more hours before dark so Dan and Kathy decided to give it a try. We all got in the car and headed to Dan's house so they could gather some dry clothes. On the way to their place I suggested they bring enough for the weekend and just stay at our place since we had plenty of room. They agreed and packed for the remainder of the weekend. We found a number of good spots with many mushrooms so our luck was beginning to turn. ...
