Chapter 11

The American Revolution turned slowly into a world war as Spain and France became embroiled in the hostilities against the British. Lloyd's had many more claims from bad weather and the deprivations from rebel privateers. As a result their premiums went up and that caused considerable grumbling among the merchants and producers. It was a time of considerable unemployment in some quarters because the American markets were obviously closed to British trade which made a bad situation much worse.

Edward returned to his elegant town home after a particularly long day. Just as he was about to walk up the steps to his front porch, he was confronted by two young women waiting at his door. They were very poorly clad. Patches broke up the monotony of the ill fitting, drab dresses which hung loosely from their slender frames. Their hair was matted and they smelled of the street. Each lovely face was pinched and pale and their eyes looked at him with frank desperation. The taller one asked, "Might you be Mister Spencer sir?"

He raised his eyebrows slightly, "Aye and who are you might I ask?" His voice was cool but not unfriendly.
