The sound was monotonous and grating on Mike's nerves as he passed yet more and more items over the checkout scanner. Baked beans, cereal, milk. All of it so boring! He'd been in the job a couple of years now. Since finishing university with a 2:1 in English he hadn't managed to find a decent job, more importantly a career, and had had to take a position at the local supermarket just to make ends meet. With each item passed over the checkout he cursed the company under his breath. God, he hated it!

"£10.74, please." he said to the old woman in front of him, who passed him a £20 note. "Do you have the seventy-four?" The woman looked at him. He repeated the question louder. A dumb smile but no answer. Again he asked. She cocked her head, puzzled. "Never mind." He handed her the change as another woman piled her goods onto the conveyor belt.

"Cheer up, Mike!" said a female voice from behind him. He turned and smiled at Tracy as she walked past, grinning at him. "Home time in a few hours." She squeezed his shoulders and walked off down the bread aisle, her hips swaying rhythmically. Mike watched her go longingly before a deliberate cough from the customer he was supposed to be serving awoke interrupted his daydream. He grinned apologetically and ...
