Accidental Discoveries-chapter 17

For the first few days after they got home, they worked hard to get things back to normal but Elaine's recalcitrant attitude made it impossible. Jenni and Danni both tried hard to focus on their school work and jobs, but the dour mood at home made it impossible. Mary just seemed to move through the day on autopilot, without a smile and very few words.

Danni decided to stay home on Thursday due to a nasty headache, so Jenni went to school without her. When she came home, the house was dark and empty. When she called out their names, neither Danni nor Mary answered.

First confused, but then concerned, she prowled the house until she went into Mary's bedroom to find an envelope lying on the pillow addressed to Elaine. Fearing the worst, she raced into their room to find a similar envelope on her pillow as well. With her heart racing a mile a minute, and tears streaming down her face, she ripped the envelope open to find several pages written in Danni's hand. Tear stains were everywhere and it was obvious that her hands were shaking when she wrote it.
