Tommy watches the rapidly diminishing tail lights of the taxi as it sped away into the night with Melanie. He shook his head as if to clear it. This is not happening he thought. He got into his own car and called his dad telling him that Melanie was not feeling well and he was taking her home.

He drove thinking Melanie had gone to the house. It was an hour away and once he got there, he raced into the house taking the stairs two at a time and burst into the sitting room. It was quiet and softly lit. He strode into the bedroom and it was the same. He opened her closet and there hung her clothes. Her bathroom was the same as it was before. He swore under his breath and raced back to his garage to drive into the city. It was a good 45 minutes away, but he hit the famous NYC traffic and finally arrived back at the apartment after an hour and half. He went directly to the penthouse master bedroom and looked around. On the dresser was a white envelope addressed in Melanie's elegant script. He picked it up and tore it open and read the note:

Dearest Tommy,

I thought we could pick up where we left off two years ago, but I see that I was wrong. Too many things have changed since then and there seems to be no place for me in your new life.

I have loved you for as long as I can remember and will love you ...
