Our wedding anniversary was coming up. We'd had a fraught couple of months leading up to it so I decided that a weekend break in the village where we'd first got together would be just what the doctor ordered. I secretly booked a room in the local pub and made all the other arrangements.

The Thursday before the weekend finally arrived and I let Michelle know we were going away for a few days so that she could pack. I deliberately didn't tell her where we would be going so as not to spoil the surprise.

Friday morning came; we packed the bags into the car and headed off North. The traffic was hell. Everyone and his mother seemed to be going our way and, to cap it all, we were delayed an hour because someone had had an accident. By the time we arrived in the Yorkshire Dales my planned surprise was not going as well as it might. Fortunately the last few miles to our destination cheered us up, the sun was out and the scenery was stunning.

We finally pulled up at our destination, an old country pub on the edge of a small village. A few minutes later we were registered, in our room and ready to shower the stress of travel away.
