I picked Jane and Sammy up from the flat they shared in Princes' Street in Taunton and drove to the Hospital.

The party was in the dining hall of the Nurses accommodation, a four-storey block near the main gates.

Trestle tables covered in sheets made a bar in one corner and more tables and sheets a base for a small disco unit in another. The lights were already dim as we arrived. Music played and a number of brave girls were moving on the dance area. I wouldn't do that until I had about five pints of beer inside me, which wasn't going to happen tonight as I was driving. I got three cokes from the bar whilst the girls hung up the coats and found a table.
