Paper Boy

Hi, I'm Matt and I wanted to tell you about some things that have happened to me in the last several years. About three years ago, I lost my mom to cancer. My dad ran up huge medical bills during her illness and it was pretty crippling to our family. I was fifteen at the time and told my dad I could help out with expenses, so I got a paper-route and started delivering the Daily News every afternoon and also on Sunday mornings.

I didn't mind the work; in fact it kept me busy when some of my friends were getting in trouble with [censored] with too much idle time on their hands. Between my route and homework, I didn't have much time for anything else. I handed over most my earnings to my dad to help with groceries and so forth, so I had little money to spend on myself.

The paper route was in my neighborhood and ended just 3 blocks away from my house. Sometimes I'd walk the route and other times I would use my bike. I got to know what each person liked as far as the delivery of their daily paper and if I did it correctly each day, it would make a big difference in the tips I'd get when I went around to "collect" from the subscribers.

One house near the end of my route was an older lady (close to fifty years old) named May. She would often be out in her front yard doing ...
