Exploring old friends

It had been quite a while since I'd seen Joe. Over the years my wife Deb and I had become good friends with him and his wife Julie; our children too were the same age as theirs and had gone to school together. Joe and Julie were a couple of years younger than we were but we always mixed well enough and shared the odd B-B-Q from time to time during the warm summer evenings. They lived across the street from us about 100 yards further up. Joe was on the driveway cleaning his car as I drove past, so I stopped to say "Hi... " and to ask of his general well-being. We made small talk for a short while until he informed me that Julie had left him several months ago and had taken the children with her. I was quite shocked and felt an immediate sense of his loss. I noticed too that he had lost some weight and that he wasn't looking his normal self.

"Tell you what" I said, "I'll come around one night and bring over a few beers, we can talk bullshit till we pass out". He smiled and said "That would be great Pat; it's been a while since I had any decent company".

When I got home I told Deb what had happened and said that I'd make an effort to go around and see him one night to try and cheer him up. She thought the idea was a good one and said she had heard whisperings that they had split. They'd been together almost as long as we had.
