Part 6: Long Lost Friends

Lisa Vaughn woke with a start, a short squeak escaping her lips. She looked around the room she was in, her eyes wide; it seemed to her that she could still hear the footsteps of her pursuers in her ears. Then she recognized where she was. She was in a motel room and she was with her Master. The fading daylight was filtering through the curtains into the room, casting long shadows. Just a bad dream, just a bad dream. Lisa told herself, her lips curving into a smile despite the lingering memory of her nightmare. Darren would be around somewhere, most likely in the bathroom, having a shower or something, and seeing him would banish all traces of the nightmare; traces of the stealthy footsteps of unseen men who had been chasing her through an endlessly dark and dusty hayloft. Her Master would make it all better. She liked the sound of that. Looking up at the ceiling, Lisa could see cobwebs in the corner of the faded, water stained ceiling. Seated in the middle of it like a small inkblot was a fat, black spider. Lisa detested spiders but now, with her nightmare fading, and the thought of Darren - of seeing him and being his - clear in her mind, Lisa could find a smile for it.

Watching the spider in its web, a thought dawned in Lisa's mind: she couldn't hear the shower. The bathroom was only a few feet away, this motel room wasn't a penthouse suite at the Plaza, if Darren was in ...
