I had just jumped companies, taking a position with what had been my competitors. In doing this I had also managed to bring along a major service contract with me. I had been servicing the machines at this insurance company for a couple of years and they insisted that they have me no matter what company I was working for. My new company wanted the business, so in spite of not wanting to pay the high price tag I insisted on, agreed to the deal.

I was only with the new company 3 weeks when I made a major goof. I had been doing some software updates and somewhere along the line I turned off some switches in the program. This caused a major error in the days processing. This resulted in a government fine of $10,000. The vice president of the division, Steve Buckley, e mailed me and told me he wanted to meet with me that afternoon after the close of business. I was very nervous; I knew I had screwed up royally. Steve had said he would come down to my office as soon as he could. I waited after everyone had gone for the day. Steve didn't show up for another 45 minutes. He looked almost angry when he came into my office and closed the door behind him.

"What the hell happened here yesterday?" he asked sternly.

I gave him the technical explanation and took full responsibility for the mistake.
