Jen fumbled through her purse trying to find the key to Arthur’s apartment. She was trying to be quiet but opening an unfamiliar door in the dark while drunk was proving to be nearly impossible. After finding the key, she tried to place it in the lock. Her aim was a little off and she ended up first scraping the lock and then dropping the keys with a small crash onto the concrete porch. The porch light flew on and blinded her and then Arthur opened the door. “What’s going on out here?”

“Oh, nothing. I just dropped the key,” and she bent over to try and pick them up. She reached for them awkwardly and then, losing her balance, fell down onto the porch.

“Be careful,” he said as he helped her up. “You’ve been drinking a bit, haven’t ya?” He chuckled at her.

“It is Saturday, isn’t it?” she asked defensively. Arthur was an older man – a friend of her father’s who had agreed to take her in for a while when her father moved across country. She was to stay with him only for the summer until her current school semester ended, and then she would transfer to the college nearer to her mother’s home where she would then live. She had stayed with him for less than a week and wasn’t sure if she had offended him by coming in drunk and late.

He laughed at her defensiveness and said, “No problem... I don’t mind.” ...
