Bush Pilot

My name is Greg and I'm writing this story about an experience I had back nearly thirty years ago up in Alaska. I had been flying supply planes in and out of various canneries up in the area around Nome in the late 70's. The weather was brutal and the pay was so-so, but the scenery and the people made it all worth while.

A buddy of mine, Smokey, and fellow pilot was a bush pilot up in the same area ferrying in supplies to many of the trappers and miners up in the northern reaches of the Bearing Sea. I got a call one day from Smokey telling me he was laid-up with a ruptured appendics and asked if I could fly his route with his de Havilland Beaver float plane to make his deliveries. He offered me nearly double the amount I was currently making so I readily agreed.

It was a little different getting used to his airplane, but after several take-offs and landings, I was feeling pretty comfortable with it. The locations of some of his delivery customers were pretty obscure and when the clouds and fog set in, sometimes you'd just have to set the plane down on a lake and wait out the weather.
