My New Neighbor - Chapter 2

As I was about to press the bell again, the door opened a crack revealing the slightly suspicious face of my neighbor. I tried to see how he was dressed, but the room was too dark and he was standing well back from the partially opened door.

"Good morning," he said in a husky voice that seemed to crack a little as if he were somewhat nervous.

"Hello," I said, annoyed to hear the quiver in my own voice. "I, uh, I'm Jenny Fountain. I live in the house behind you, and uh, well . . . I just wanted to say hello and welcome you to the neighborhood.

"I've been meaning to come over and talk since you moved in," I prattled on, talking too fast and knowing it, but unable to stop myself. "I just haven't had a chance until today, and when I saw you were home. . ." I broke off, not knowing exactly how to finish that sentence.

He smiled and opened the door a little wider. I could see that his arm and shoulder were bare, but was still unable to see the rest of him. "Pleased to meet you, Jenny. I'm Tom Herbert."

He cleared his throat and smiled sheepishly. "I'd invite you in, but I wasn't expecting anyone so I'm not exactly dressed for company." ...
