A misunderstanding between my wife and I over some trivial thing had escalated into World War III. Then came the silent treatment, weeks without a word exchanged between us. One Friday afternoon on the way home from work, I felt an over-powering need to carry on a friendly conversation with someone. I stopped at a bar called The Lumberjack that I had driven past hundreds of times.

I didn't see anything unusual about the place. I had been in hundreds of bars just like it, or so I thought. I didn't see any women but didn't give it much thought.
