Scouting the Intangibles

The scout gazed out on the field at the ballplayers seeing a few good ones, but none that really stood out with the tools one needed to succeed in professional baseball. A couple had good speed, but no arm or hitting ability. A couple others could hit the ball hard but couldn't run or field. Adjusting his Panama hat and wiping his brow, he looked at the scoreboard and saw there were two innings to go in this afternoon High School affair. He rarely left games early, as he felt it was disrespectful to the players, the game and himself- for if he left early and some kid came off the bench with that special something he wouldn't be there to see it. That was quite rare however.....

"So you see anyone, Mr. Carabini?"

The question came from the young writer who was doing an article on baseball scouting. Vic Carabini tolerated him because baseball scouting never got the credit it deserved so when asked for an interview by this kid he felt compelled to say yes.

"No, not really. A couple of them might make it in Junior College baseball, but I see no professional prospects."
