Reciprocity Chapter 1

Kienna Lauacateine sat at the bottom of the deep tank, her translucent protective bubble providing active camouflage as well as recycled oxygen. All around her bubble swirled an ocean of viscous, pitch-black fluid that was rapidly pouring in from some source above.

She knew, just by her quickly memorized knowledge of the star system, that the liquid around her was a form of hydrocarbon; the humans had spent four hours so far sucking it out of an obscure moon circling the second largest planet in the region.

The Siluvaran military had sent her here to Earth, to fulfill an almost impossible mission under the best of conditions. More than likely, Kienna had surmised, her mission would be equally accomplished if she failed to report back. But that was the risk she accepted; she was a soldier and she had orders to follow, and moreover soldiers never ran from a fight. Plus, if she chickened out on this task, why wouldn't everyone else?

She had long ago resolved to trust her leaders' wisdom. She put her life on the line for a higher cause. Yet she couldn't help but wonder why they only sent one person. This task before her clearly required an ...
