The sight of my husband bound to a kitchen chair with blood dripping freely from both nose and mouth bought me to a sudden halt. The rapid movement in the corner of my eye and the synchronised sound of the kitchen door slamming shut allowed me to regain enough presence of mind to whirl around with my fists balled and raised in front of my face.

"Good evening Mrs Cope", drawled a tall, smiling stranger dressed in an expensive business suit, "It's good of you to join us."

Smiling at my protective stance, he withdrew one of my kitchen knives from behind his back and motioned with it towards where Steve sat tied and gagged.
